Tesla Discounts Model S, X; Some Now Qualify for Tax Credits

2021 Tesla Model XTesla has once again slashed prices on its most expensive models. Both the Model S sedan and the Model X SUV see price cuts, but they may be more significant to SUV shoppers.

The moves should allow some versions of the high-end Model X SUV to qualify for federal EV tax credits.

Tesla’s website shows that some buyers can qualify for the full $7,500 EV tax credit on the base Model X. The federal government’s own list of qualifying vehicles does not list the Model X among qualifying cars, but it has not been updated since the discounts were announced.

The two cars have seen repeated price cuts this year. The base version of the Model S started the year with a sticker of $104,990. It now retails for $74,990. The base version of the Model X, on Jan. 1, carried a price tag of $120,990. Today, it retails for $79,990 – under the $80,000 threshold that allows SUVs to qualify for federal EV tax credits.
