Tesla Announces Limited Free Holiday Charging

Tesla has a holiday gift for its customers: Three days of free charging.

Tesla owners can charge their cars for free, during certain nighttime hours, between Thursday, December 23, and Sunday, December 26.

The move is meant to help ease what could become a charging crunch. Many of us are gearing up to travel for the holidays. That can mean lines at gas stations and electric car charging stations. Since charging an electric vehicle (EV) takes longer than fueling up a gasoline-powered car, those lines could hold up some travelers.

Tesla would like to encourage drivers to charge during off-peak hours to ease that demand. So, some Tesla Superchargers won’t require payment from travelers between 7 pm and 10 am during the holidays.

The offer applies only along certain heavily traveled routes. They are mostly concentrated on the West Coast, though parts of Florida and Pennsylvania are also covered. Check the map on Tesla’s website to see if your route is covered.

Tesla’s Supercharger network currently works only for Tesla drivers. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to open its chargers to owners of other EVs in 2021. That doesn’t seem to have happened yet.  We’ll bring an update on progress when Tesla offers one. We would ask for details, but Tesla is the only major automaker that doesn’t operate a public relations department to field questions from reporters.
