Subaru’s first electric vehicle (EV) will be a compact SUV sharing most of its parts with the upcoming Toyota bZ4x, but a much simpler name — Solterra.
Neither company has revealed much in the way of mechanical details, but Subaru showed off the whole of the Solterra with a video released yesterday, after months of sharing teaser shots revealing small parts of the vehicle.
Subaru has promised the Solterra will be all-wheel drive like the rest of its lineup. That almost certainly means a pair of electric motors, one per axle. We expect the car to be priced at around $45,000 to stay competitive with other electric SUVs. It will appear as a 2023 model.
It looks nearly identical to the Toyota. A sharply-raked liftgate with twin spoilers and unusual black plastic body cladding around the front fenders that wraps all the way onto the front of the car are the signature elements.
Inside, a clean, minimalist design looks simpler than that found on most current Subaru products. The Solterra does appear to feature more heavily bolstered seats than Toyota’s equivalent.
Subaru hasn’t told us when to expect the Solterra. The pace of reveals suggests that we’ll know details later this year.
