Subaru Opens Solterra Reservations Until Feb. 28

If you’re interested in Subaru’s first electric car, you need to act quickly. Subaru has begun taking reservations for its Solterra EV, but only for a limited time.

The 2023 Subaru Solterra is a compact SUV with a range of over 220 miles. It shares many of its parts with the Toyota bZ4x. Both SUVs feature angular profiles and heavy body cladding around the fenders. The Solterra comes in all-wheel-drive only (Toyota will sell the bZ4X in both all- and front-wheel-drive).

Subaru hasn’t revealed pricing on the Solterra. But you can reserve the right to buy one now by paying a $250 deposit and selecting your preferred trim and color. Subaru says reservations will close on February 28. They could close earlier if they sell out quickly, as the company plans to build a limited number of Solterras the first year.

Reports of Markups; Reservations Refundable

Reservation holders will be asked to designate a nearby Subaru dealership they’d like to work with to complete the purchase. That process may prove fraught – there’s already a Solterra owner’s forum, and it already has its first report of a dealership calling to add a markup to an already-reserved car.

Automakers and their dealership networks have begun to battle over markups for popular cars. Both Ford and GM have recently warned dealerships to cut out hefty markups, We recommend that buyers get a signed purchase agreement with the price specified in writing any time they place an order for a car, and remember that Subaru’s reservations are refundable if you need to cancel.
