Shoppers who buy a new electric vehicle (EV) often face a second big expense immediately — purchasing a home charger to power it.
EV owners do most of their charging at home. But, plugged into a standard household outlet, many electric cars may need to charge for 24 hours or more. To speed things up, owners often install a Level 2 charger.

These units use a 240-volt connection, like many electric ranges and clothes dryers. They cut charging time for most EVs to just a few hours so owners can plug in when they’re home and rarely need to recharge elsewhere.
But home chargers typically do not come with the car gratis — unless you buy your new EV from a Stellantis brand. Now, Stellantis, the parent company of Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Maserati, and Ram, offers a free at-home charging station with the purchase of every EV.

Buyers of each can choose from $600 worth of free public charging stations or a Free2Move brand home charger “valued at approximately $600.” The package does not include the cost of installing the unit — an effort that requires a professional electrician and legal permits in some places. But Stellantis will put buyers in touch with a list of preferred electricians in their area who can handle installation and permitting.
