Sporty Polestar 3 SUV Teased

Electric automaker Polestar’s next product will be a sleek SUV designed to put the “sport” back in sport utility vehicle.

The company will reveal details on the 2023 Polestar 3 in October. For now, we have an image and a few hints but not much else to go on.

About Polestar

Polestar, in case you haven’t seen it in 6 billion television commercials, is an electric vehicle (EV) builder. It started as a performance unit of Volvo but has spun off into a separate automaker developing a lineup of EVs. It advertises itself as a sort of anti-Tesla, with taglines about focusing on Earth instead of Mars.

Its main product is the Polestar 2, a 5-door midsize car that splits the difference between sedan and hatchback with rugged good looks and up to 270 miles of range.

And yes, there is a Polestar 1. The Polestar 1 is a pricey high-performance plug-in hybrid sport coupe that is built in limited numbers and is already in its final production run after just two years.

About the Polestar 3

The upcoming 3, however, is a far more important product. After all, the best-selling EV in America is Tesla’s Model Y SUV.  The Polestar 3 looks built to take it on, though the company hasn’t even hinted at pricing yet.

The 3 is undeniably gorgeous. The same blunt ends, curvy greenhouse, and big wheel arches that make the Polestar 2 look like it should have off-road pretensions (it doesn’t) make more visual sense in SUV form. A big rear roofline spoiler and rising window line at the D-pillar look sporty. Unusual vents in the hood make it look as though the front fascia functions as a sort of spoiler for the front wheels.

Details Vague for Now

Polestar could probably be vaguer about mechanical details, but it would take effort. For now, the company says, “Polestar 3 will feature a dual-motor drivetrain and a large battery.”

The company also promises “autonomous highway piloting” based on a lidar system “over time.”

The third Polestar won’t be the last. The company says it “plans to launch a new car every year for the next three years.”  There’s still no word on whether the stunning drop-top 02 sports car concept will be one of them.
