Revealed: 2014 Alfa Romeo 4C – Geneva 2013

While complete tech specs await its official grand entry in Geneva, several images of the production-spec 2014 Alfa Romeo 4C have now been released. This stunning, mid-engine/rear-drive ultra-coupe retains many of the visual and mechanical elements seen on the original Alfa 4C Concept that was revealed at the Swiss show in 2011. Set to go on sale later this year, the car will inaugurate the Italian automaker’s ambitious global growth plan — including its return to the U.S. market after a near two-decade absence.

Designed at the Alfa Romeo Style Center in Turin, the new 4C draws inspiration from several of Alfa’s historic performance machines, its key influences being the V8-power 8C Competizione, 6-cylinder 6C and the 33 Stradale. The bodywork on this strikingly low-slung 2-seater is aerodynamically-optimized to produce stability-enhancing high-speed downforce without the need for external spoilers. Beneath its skin is a supercar-style carbon fiber central tub matched with aluminum suspension elements that collectively ensure a package that’s both light and agile.

Motivation for the 2014 Alfa Romeo 4C comes from a new, all-aluminum 1,750cc Turbo engine derived from the 4-cylinder iron-block unit currently used in the Quadrifoglio Verde version of the Giulietta. Fitted with direct fuel injection and dual continuous variable valve timing, it also features a unique scavenging system on the turbo that Alfa claims completely eliminates lag. While final output has not yet been divulged, it’s now expected to produce around 240 horsepower. With a curb weight believed to be under 2,200 pounds, that should be enough to send the 4C sprinting from 0-60 mph in less than 5.0 seconds. 

Backing the engine is Alfa’s TCT twin dry-clutch automatic transmission, a lightning-fast sequential unit that can be shifted using paddles mounted behind the steering wheel. The new 4C also boasts an enhanced version of the automaker’s Alfa DNA selector that augments the existing Dynamic/Natural/All Weather drive settings with a new track-friendly "Race" mode that further sharpens responsiveness.

The 2014 Alfa Romeo 4C will be manufactured at the Maserati facility in Modena, Italy. Production will be limited to about 2,500 units annually worldwide, with roughly 40 percent of those earmarked for America. While pricing won’t be revealed until closer to its on-sale date, it’s rumored the U.S.-spec 4C will open between $70,000 and $80,000.
