The Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV might soon be known as the ID.Tiguan. The name change would mark a shift away from numeric branding.
Industry publication Automotive News reported the looming change, citing a German labor union. Volkswagen has not officially commented on the reported plans.
The rebadging of the compact electric SUV will reportedly come with a facelift for the vehicle that will happen later this year. The updated model is expected to more closely resemble the gas-powered Tiguan.
Automotive News explains, “By reviving familiar model names, the automaker aims to give its electric lineup more emotional resonance with customers.”
Volkswagen is possibly looking to evoke more familiar model names to also illustrate alignment between electric and gas-powered offerings.
The name “Tiguan” is a combination of the German words for “tiger” (Tiger) and “iguana” (Leguan). Pronounced “TEE-gwan,” the name represents the vehicle’s design and performance — poised for action like a tiger, yet adaptable to various terrains like an iguana.
