- A new report says the Ram 1500 TRX high-performance pickup will be back in January
- It could be the first project of a reformed SRT
The battle of the supertrucks has felt lackluster for a while. Ford seemed to have won it. The Ford F-150 Raptor created the segment. Then the V8-powered F-150 Raptor R seemed to clear it out.
Chevrolet introduced the Silverado ZR2 Bison, but declined to give it the kind of hyper-powered V8 that would truly take the fight to the Fords. Ram retired the TRX at the end of 2023. Then Ram introduced the RHO as its new apex predator truck – with 540 horsepower, well below the 702 of the retired TRX.
It turns out Ram was just woodshedding. A new report says that a brand new Ram 1500 TRX will appear as soon as next January, possibly with more power than even the 720-hp Raptor R.
Mopar Insiders has the report, citing “well-placed sources within the company.” The site says the next TRX will be the first project of the reborn SRT high-performance division behind many of Dodge and Ram’s most powerful models.
Now that the federal government has defanged its fuel economy standards, Ram parent company Stellantis is diving into V8 engines with renewed verve. Mopar Insiders notes that the latest version of the brand’s Hellcat V8 engine “already makes 717 hp in Charger and Challenger SRT HELLCAT trims.” So, with new tuning from a resurrected SRT engineering team, “it wouldn’t be surprising to see the TRX tuned to meet or exceed 720 hp right out of the gate.”
