The Maserati Ghibli is a distinctive choice among luxury sport sedans. It’s designed to compete with executive sedans like the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. For a price similar to German 4-doors that look like family cars, the Ghibli offers exotic Italian sex appeal and a burbling exhaust note that will thrill you every time you pull out of the neighborhood.
But, reportedly, not for long.
Automotive News says the Ghibli will end after one more year of production. No replacement will come. A Maserati spokesperson partially confirms the rumor, saying that “the current Ghibli will be in production until 2023,” but not commenting on its future beyond that.
Ending the Ghibli wouldn’t mean Maserati was returning to its exotic-car-only roots. The Levante SUV would likely remain available below six figures. Next year, the company also plans a new entry-level model, the Grecale SUV. An ongoing global microchip shortage has delayed Grecale’s arrival, but Maserati still plans to unveil it next spring.
But it would leave the $143,000-and-up Quattroporte as the company’s only sedan.
