- Infiniti has been an SUV-only brand since late 2024
- A new report says the automaker plans a reborn Q50 sedan with new performance chops
Infiniti doesn’t make sedans. The luxury marque of Nissan once targeted BMW’s reputation with a range of sporty sedans, coupes, and even a hardtop convertible well-regarded by enthusiasts for its crisp handling even with the heavy roof in the trunk.
But in late 2024, Infiniti canceled its last sedan, the Q50.
A new report, however, suggests the company is plotting a comeback. And it will reportedly come back raring to grasp the performance reputation it once chased.
Industry publication Automotive News reports, “Infiniti will deliver a second-generation gasoline-powered Q50 in the second half of 2027.”
The car will rely on some sporty bones. Like the old Q50, AN says the next one will borrow its platform from the Skyline, a sporty sedan the company sells in Japan. It will get its engine from the Nissan Z coupe.
The Z carries a 400-horsepower twin-turbo V6.
The car will also offer a manual transmission, be rear-wheel drive (RWD), and may have a high-performance Red trim level.
Nissan reportedly showed the car to U.S. dealers at a meeting in Las Vegas. One attendee, on condition of anonymity, told AN the next Q50 “is a visceral car with a twin-turbo that screams. It’s not practical, but it is fun.”
The move comes as Infiniti attempts to rebuild its reputation to help troubled parent company Nissan out of a financial crunch. Infiniti released a new QX80 SUV with a more sophisticated style this year, and recently revealed an impending replacement for its QX60, likely to be called the QX65.
