Infiniti is reportedly taking steps to create a performance division that could rival BMW M and Mercedes-AMG. The first step: a fast-track launch of the QX80 Red Sport.
Red Sport was the performance trim level of the discontinued Q50 sedan and Q60 coupe. Instead of diving in headfirst to its performance division, Infiniti is opting to wade in, or at least, test the waters, according to a new report. Infiniti product marketing director Brian Maragno describes Red Sport to industry publication Automotive News as “An additional level of performance but not going all the way” to the previously teased QX80 Track Spec concept.
What to Expect From Red Sport
Automotive News reports that the 600 hp SUV is expected to arrive next spring and will feature larger red brake calipers, red “S” badging, and possibly 24-inch wheels. It’s expected that the Red Sport treatment would be available on the QX80 Sport and Autograph trims and could have “at least a 10 % price premium,” according to a source who spoke to Automotive News. Dealers will be chosen based on QX80 sales. About 600 Red Sport QX80s are expected to be released.
“The idea is to keep pushing toward the North Star but address the market need in the interim,” Maragno said. “Whetting the market’s appetite with this model will allow the brand to find the niche above this group later,” he further commented.
In its current form, the 2026 Infiniti QX80 boasts 450 hp from its twin-turbo V6 engine.
The Next Level
The next step after releasing the QX80 Red Sport would be the unveiling of a full-blown high-performance QX80, potentially in 2028. It could deliver up to 680 hp, have an aggressive body kit, wider fender flares, refined suspension tuning, and active exhaust, according to the inside source.
Other QX80 Concepts
The Red Sport and ultra-high-performing variants may not be the only additions to the QX80 lineup. The QX80 Track Spec and Terrain Spec concepts were unveiled in August, featuring high-performance and luxury off-road versions, though it’s not clear when or if these will come to market.
