Honda has barely begun sales of its all-new, high-performance 2023 Honda Civic Type R and may have already halted them over a safety issue.
According to a notice to dealers posted on the enthusiast CivicXI forum, dealers have been ordered to stop selling the car while Honda launches a recall campaign to fix the problem. Honda hasn’t commented yet, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hasn’t yet published the recall. But we have little reason to doubt the document’s authenticity.
The problem, the document explains, is potentially faulty welds in the driver’s seat frame. In an accident, the welds could break, compromising how the seat and seatbelt work together to protect the driver.
The document says owners might notice squealing or rattling noises as the problem develops.
We’ve reached out to Honda for comment and will update this story when they respond.
Should Honda launch a recall, the repair will be free. By law, there is never a charge for recall repairs.
