Report: EV Charging Demand Outpacing Network Growth

  • A ChargePoint report shows that in 2025, charging sessions increased by 34%, outpacing the 16% growth in new charging ports.
  • Despite Q4 collapse, 2025 saw the second-best year on record for EV sales in the U.S.

The infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) is not currently meeting demand, despite repeated concerns about the future of EVs, according to a new report. A ChargePoint report reveals that total charging sessions with the company increased 34% in 2025. New charging ports grew only 16%.

EV charging infrastructure isn’t keeping pace with driver demand, even after the sudden drop in sales in the last quarter of 2025. Rick Wilmer, CEO of ChargePoint, explains that this is largely due to the fact that “New EV sales are no longer the primary benchmark for charger demand, it is the total number of EVs on the road.”

It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint

As many expected, EV sales in Q4 of last year declined significantly after the electric vehicle tax credit ended. However, a Cox Automotive study indicates that, despite this drop, 2025 was the second-best year on record for EV sales in the United States. Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of Industry Insights at Cox Automotive, says that “Rather than signaling a retreat from electrification, this shift marks a structural transition toward a market increasingly driven by consumer choice.”

Cox Automotive is the parent company of Kelley Blue Book.

Just because EV sales didn’t increase across the board in 2025 doesn’t mean that the market will not continue to grow. In fact, many believe we will continue to see market growth as more affordable options emerge, infrastructure improves, and consumer confidence in EV technology increases. Echoing sentiments from the Cox Automotive study: Change takes time.

Even if we can’t expect to see a charging station on every corner anytime soon, this data shows that some infrastructure improvements will be needed in 2026 if we want to continue supporting all EVs currently on the road and those to come.
