Station wagon lovers have had a rough go of it in the U.S. recently. So we’re delighted to bring them some good news – BMW’s decision to bring the longroof version of its high-performance M5 to the U.S. is paying off.
BMWBlog reports that the M5 Touring wagon is outselling the M5 sedan stateside.
Frank Van Meel, head of BMW’s M high-performance division, told the outlet “We currently have a higher demand in the U.S. for the Touring than for the sedan.”
Wagons have seemed to be on the ropes in the U.S. in recent years.
Volvo long led the charge for wagon lovers. But the brand canceled its ordinary V90 wagon in 2021, keeping the high-riding Cross Country variant. It trimmed the V60 wagon’s lineup to just a Cross Country version and a high-performance Polestar Engineered model around the same time. In February, it retired the Polestar version, too.
Porsche no longer builds a Panamera wagon for the U.S.
But the other German luxury brands have kept the flame. Mercedes still offers a wagon version of its E-Class luxury car. In the high-powered wagon category, the M5 competes with the Audi RS 6 Avant.
