Acura’s U.S. lineup is heavy with SUVs, but the automaker doesn’t offer a 3-row model with expansive passenger space like many of its competitors. That’s scheduled to change later this decade, according to a new report from industry publication Automotive News, as Acura is expected to release a new flagship SUV.
Parent company Honda’s internal documents reportedly refer to the vehicle as the “Acura XL,” which will slot above the MDX in the premium brand’s catalog. The new SUV is expected to use a new hybrid powertrain, and Acura reportedly plans to reach an annual production volume of 40,000 units.
As automakers always do, Honda declined to comment on future products, but it’s no secret that there’s a 3-row SUV-sized hole in Acura’s lineup. The MDX offers three rows of seating, but it’s not as spacious or accessible as the family-friendly Lexus TX. Acura’s price point also gives it an edge over European alternatives, such as the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS.
While the model is still unconfirmed, dealers are unsurprisingly excited about it. One told Automotive News, “I hope it’s a full-fledged large SUV that gives us the ability to compete against Tahoe, Expedition, Escalade. If it’s a body-on-frame platform, or an extended wheelbase, not only do you get three rows, but you get added cargo space.”
Acura faces a bumpy few years ahead, even if it officially greenlights the new 3-row model. RDX production will pause for at least two years due to parts shortages, and the company cut the ZDX electric SUV late in 2025.
That will leave the automaker with just three vehicles on sale: ADX, MDX, and Integra. The new model’s production kickoff isn’t expected until at least 2029, which would likely make it a 2030 model.
