- The Nissan Z is a cult-favorite, old-school sports car with up to 420 horsepower, rear-wheel drive (RWD), and a purity of purpose that leaves the big screens for other cars.
- It’s about to become hard to find, a new report claims, with dealers expected to get “just two to three cars” each to sell.
True sports cars are rare in our time. The best-selling cars of the day are jacks-of-all-trades — SUVs with family space and cargo space, and foul-weather-ready all-wheel drive (AWD), and as much entertainment as the TV room in your house.
Pure, RWD two-seaters like the Nissan Z and the Toyota GR Supra still exist. But dealers don’t give them much space on the lot because it’s rare for a customer to walk in looking for one.
A new report says Nissan has formally reached that conclusion. Every Nissan dealer will be able to order you a 2027 Nissan Z, The Drive reports. But most will not stock more than two or three all year.
The Goal? Get You to Custom Order
- Dealers will keep a Z or two around, mostly so you can test-drive one and then customize your dream model.
“Our goal is simple—deliver the purest Z experience possible to the customers who value it most,” the company said in a statement. That means dealers will keep one around so customers can experience the car. But Nissan expects most sales to be build-to-order specials.
Sports cars are emotional purchases that drivers often want for a long time before they buy. That can leave them with very specific expectations and desires. “If we get the color wrong, or we get the interior wrong, or we get the object package wrong, it’s just gonna sit there,” former Nissan Senior Vice President Michael Soutter said.
So the company will instead aim for small “sustainable inventories” and guide buyers toward ordering their dream Z.
We haven’t seen pricing for the 2027 model. But it will likely be similar to the 2026 Nissan Z on dealer lots today. That one starts at $44,215 (including a mandatory $1,245 delivery fee) with prices topping out below $70,000 for the high-performance Nismo Z version.
