Toyota is recalling 550,007 vehicles for defective seat backs that do not lock into position. The following vehicles are affected:
- 2021-2024 Highlander
- 2021-2024 Highlander Hybrid
Toyota told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that “the second-row seat backs may fail to lock into position during seat back adjustment.”
The company notes that the affected vehicles’ recliner assemblies don’t lock or hold the adjusted position, thus impeding the appropriate restraint of rear passengers. This issue can increase the risk of injury in a high-speed crash.
Toyota dealers will replace the return springs in the recliner assemblies with new and improved ones at no cost.
Owners will be notified beginning May 4, 2026.
While automakers do their best to notify every vehicle owner affected by a recall, they may not reach everyone. Discover whether your vehicle has any outstanding recalls by checking the easy-to-use vehicle identification number (VIN) tool at our recall center.
