Ford has announced safety recalls covering its 2020-2021 Explorer SUV, 2020-2021 Lincoln Aviator luxury SUV, and separately, the 2020 E-Series van.
On both SUVs, fasteners attaching the passenger-side motor mount to the engine bay may back out from vibration. It could cause the motor mount to fail. Ford says this “may result in a loss of power.”
We should note that the engines of these vehicles mount to the frame in several places. One failing mount is unlikely to cause the engine to fall. Ford is not aware of any incidents related to the defect. It’s an issue service technicians have noticed in a handful of cars. The fix involves the replacement of the mounts and their fasteners. Not all Explorers or Aviators are subject to the recall – just those built between July 28 and 30, 2020, at its Chicago Assembly Plant.
The E-Series recall concerns thermal insulation on the underside of the engine cover. In some vehicles, the insulation is mounted incorrectly, which can cause heat to reach surfaces inside the cabin. Ford is not aware of any injuries related to the problem and will replace the insulation free of charge.
Automotive recalls for small safety issues are surprisingly common. It’s always a good idea to check our recall center to see if your car has been subject to any recall campaigns, and the fix is always free.
