Volkswagen has issued a recall for about 48,000 Jetta sedans from models years 2019 and 2020 because their engines can stall while driving.
The problem, VW tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, involves a polyfuse that can fail, “particularly when the vehicle is operated in high temperature environments.” The company is still investigating the root cause of the failures. But it believes it can fix the problem without completely understanding what triggers it.
VW is aware of 2,654 warranty claims that may be related.
Drivers may get two warnings as the fuse fails, the company says. A message in the instrument cluster may read, “Ignition switch off, safely stop the vehicle.” A second message may appear: “Starter system faulty, please service vehicle.”
Dealers will replace the ignition switch to correct the problem.
By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
