Recall Alert: VW ID.4 Doors Popping Open

A 2023 VW ID.4 sits parked in front of a city skyline. The car is medium blue with a black roof. We see it in profile, facing to our left.Volkswagen has recalled about 16,000 ID.4 electric cars from model year 2023 because their doors can pop open while driving.

The problem, Volkswagen tells federal safety officials, is a faulty seal that can let water drip onto a circuit board in the door handle. A wet circuit board can “cause communication issues between the door handle and the door control unit.” The problem tends to occur “when the vehicle is subject to high lateral forces,” which is legalese for when you’re turning “at speeds below 9 mph.”

The company is aware of at least 10 incidents of doors opening unexpectedly.

Volkswagen hasn’t told dealers how to fix the problem yet. When the solution does come, it will be free. By law, automakers never charge for recall repairs.

Manufacturers attempt to contact every owner, but they don’t always reach them all with the news. Find out if your car has any outstanding repair orders at our recall center.
