Volkswagen has issued a recall alert for a limited number – just over 1,000 – 2023 ID.4 electric SUVs because a battery cable can short circuit, posing the risk of a fire.
The problem has nothing to do with the vehicles’ large lithium-ion battery packs. The cable in question connects to a 12-volt car battery like those found in gas-powered cars. Like most electric cars, ID.4 SUVs still have a traditional 12-volt lead-acid battery that powers some onboard electronics.
In some rear-wheel-drive (RWD) ID.4 models, VW says, one of the cables connected to that battery can rub against the steering column, causing premature wear. If too much wire insulation wears away, it can short-circuit. That could create a fire risk.
Most RWD ID.4s have their cables routed to prevent them from rubbing the shaft. A small number may have been built with incorrectly routed wires.
Dealers will inspect the wires and replace them if they are worn or routed incorrectly. In the meantime, VW is asking owners to park their vehicles outside, away from structures and other cars.
