Recall Alert: Volkswagen ID.4

Volkswagen has issued a recall for about 24,000 ID.4 electric vehicles from model years 2023 and 2024 because the sunshade that comes with their panoramic glass roofs doesn’t meet federal standards for fire safety.

Volkswagen tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “In the unlikely case of a fire inside of the vehicle, this may increase risk of injury to the vehicle occupants.”

The company knows of no incidents related to the problem, which was discovered in internal testing. The sunshades’ supplier told VW, “The material had always shown passing test results.” But VW’s own tests showed otherwise, so the company has issued a recall.

To fix the problem, dealers will “apply a fabric flame retardant onto the material of the roller sunshade.”
