Tesla has recalled about 55,000 Model X SUVs from model years 2021-2023 because they may not warn drivers when they are low on brake fluid. Low brake fluid can lead to reduced brake performance and increased braking distances. That could trigger an accident if drivers don’t know what to expect.
Tesla tells National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the sensor that detects brake fluid levels “may not be set to the correct range.”
The company says it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem.
The sensor can be adjusted remotely, so Tesla will fix the problem with a software update. Owners won’t need to bring the cars in for repair.
Instead, Tesla says, owners “need to install OTA software release 2023.32.7 or a later software release” to correct the problem. Many may have already done so — the company made the release available in late September.
Recall repairs are always free.
Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely get them all. Millions of cars on American roads need free recall repairs. Check the easy VIN tool at our recall center to determine if your car is one of them.
