Nissan has issued a recall for about 180,000 trucks that are at risk of rolling away without warning while parked.
The recall includes both of Nissan’s pickups – the Frontier midsize truck and Titan full-size truck – from model years 2020 through 2022.
In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Nissan explains that “dimensional variation during the manufacturing process” may have left some trucks with a parking pawl that doesn’t properly connect to the boss on the transmission case.
The gear lever on these trucks will move into the “park” position. That could leave drivers no clue that the park setting isn’t actually engaged.
Nissan hasn’t explained what dealers will do to repair the problem, noting that “a remedy plan for all affected vehicles” is still under development. Nissan plans to mail recall letters to owners later this month.
In the meantime, the company asks owners to apply the parking brake whenever they park their trucks, which should prevent rollaway.
Recall repairs are always free.
Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. They try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair. But they rarely reach them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
