Recall Alert: Mercedes-Benz GLE, GLS Stalling Problem

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class in green.

Mercedes-Benz has recalled about 105,000 GLE and GLS SUVs because of a transmission problem that can cause their engines to stall.

Recalled models include the:

Each recalled vehicle uses a 6-cylinder engine and a 9-speed automatic transmission.

The company tells federal safety officials that a problem with the transmission control software can cause a stall. During a particular set of circumstances (the transmission oil temperature is low, the driver brakes gently, the 48-volt starter-activator is engaged, a circus is performing in Stuttgart, a KBB editor needs more coffee, and so on),  their transmissions may fail to downshift from seventh gear to sixth. That chain of events can stall the engine.

Mercedes knows 261 field reports but no accidents or injuries related to the problem.

Dealers will fix the issue with a software update. These vehicles can’t receive software updates over the air, so owners will need to bring them to the dealership for the patch.

Recall repairs are always free. Automakers recall many cars, often more than once, during their lifespan. Automakers try to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all. Find out whether your vehicle has any outstanding recalls with the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
