Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for 283 EQB SUVs because a gear weld can fail, allowing the vehicles to roll when parked.
Mercedes-Benz tells federal safety officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that a welded gear within the front axle drivetrain may fail, which could prevent Park mode from activating. Actual rollaways should be rare because the EQB also engages a parking brake automatically when the driver switches it off or opens the door.
However, Mercedes-Benz says, “In the event of a weld failure, when the parking brake or service brake are not engaged, the vehicle might not be secured against rollaway even if the gear selector is in the ‘Park’ position.”
As the problem develops, the company says, “The driver might notice loud and clearly perceptible rattling noises during driving or while changing gears.”
Mercedes-Benz knows of five warranty claims but no accidents, injuries, or property damage from the problem.
Dealers will replace the entire front axle electric drivetrain to fix the problem. Recall repairs are always free.
Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach them all. Millions of cars on American roads need free recall repairs. Check the easy VIN tool at our recall center to determine if your car is one of them.
