.Hyundai and Kia have recalled a very small number of compact cars to address an issue that could cause them to lose steering control. The recall affects just 30 Kias — some 2021-2022 Rios and some 2021-2022 Fortes — and exactly two 2021-2022 Hyundai Accents.
The vehicles share many of their parts and are built at the same plant in Mexico.
While the recall is tiny, the problem is significant. In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the companies explain, “A bolt in the steering column may not be secured properly, which can cause the steering column to detach from the steering rack and result in a loss of steering control.”
Dealers will inspect the steering column and tighten the U-joint retention bolt free of charge.
Recall repairs are always free. Manufacturers attempt to contact every owner, but they don’t always reach them all with the news. Find out if your car has ever been recalled at our recall center.
