General Motors has issued a recall alert covering many 2021 models, but a tiny percentage of each. The recall applies to just 1,789 vehicles, but at least a few of each large SUV the automaker built for the 2021 model year. Owners of affected SUVs will receive a notice in the mail.
The recall applies to the 2021 Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Cadillac Escalade ESV.
A supplier may not have properly heat-treated ball bearings used in the rear driveshafts of these vehicles during a specific set of dates last year. That means most of the vehicles are fine, but those that received rear driveshafts built on the days in question may have a problem. GM can track those specific SUVs down by VIN (vehicle identification number).
Improperly heat-treated ball bearings can deform under the heat produced in normal driving. That would likely produce noise and vibration at first. If left untreated, it could cause the driveshaft to seize, leaving the vehicle unable to move.
Dealers will replace the driveshaft assembly free of charge.
