Recall Alert: Genesis G80, GV60, GV70, GV80

2023 Genesis G80 in green.Genesis has issued a recall order for about 65,000 cars and SUVs because of a dangerous seatbelt defect.

The recall applies to the:

Most modern car seatbelts use a device called a seatbelt pretensioner that locks the belt tight against a passenger’s body as an accident unfolds. Pretensioners must work instantly in an accident. So what activates them is a tiny explosive charge, like those used in airbag inflators.

In documents filed with federal safety officials, Genesis says some of its pretensioners “may deploy abnormally in certain crashes due to over-pressurization of the pretensioner pipe.” That “could cause metal fragments to enter the vehicle occupant compartment, which may result in injury to vehicle occupants.”

Genesis’s parent company Hyundai dealt with the same issue in an expanding series of recalls last year. The solution is the same: Genesis dealers will install a “cap” that shields occupants from the fragments.

Hyundai says it is not aware of any injuries related to the defect.
