Ford is recalling about 34,800 Mach-E electric SUVs from model years 2021-2022 because they can suddenly lose power. All of the recalled models include the extended-range battery pack.
The automaker tells federal safety officials plugging into a DC fast charger and “repeated wide open pedal events” can cause electrical contact surfaces in the junction box that draws power from the battery to deform. If that occurs, it “can result in a loss of motive power.”
Ford recalled many of these cars for the same problem in 2022. The company tried to fix it at the time with a software update.
But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it received 12 complaints from owners whose cars developed the problem even after the software update to better manage battery temperature.
So, Ford plans a more extensive repair. Dealers will replace the junction box passing power from the battery to the motor.
