Ford has issued a recall affecting about 1,200 examples of its 2022 Mustang Mach-E electric SUV because their right-rear axle half shafts can break, causing a sudden loss of power.
The recall affects vehicles built between July 18 and July 29, some of which are still on dealership lots. Dealerships will repair those models before selling them.
In documents filed with federal safety regulators, Ford explains that a supplier may have cast some rear axle half shafts with thinner walls than normal. That could cause them to break under load. “A broken halfshaft will result in loss of transmission torque to the rear wheels,” Ford explains, and could cause the vehicle to roll while in park if the parking brake isn’t applied.
Ford believes as few as 1% of the recalled cars may have the problem. The company can trace the bad parts by serial number. Dealers will inspect the serial number on the right-rear half shaft of each recalled car and replace it with a properly cast part if necessary.
