Recall Alert: Ford F-150 Rollaway Risk

Ford is recalling almost 113,000 F-150 pickups from model years 2021-2023 because a part can break, allowing the vehicle to roll away when parked.

The recall applies only to models equipped with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package and a 9.75-inch heavy duty (HD) axle.

Ford tells federal safety regulators that a “rear axle hub bolt may break due to fatigue.” If that happens, small movements can wear away splines that prevent the axle from rolling while in park. Rear-wheel-drive (RWD) models may lose the ability to move at all, while 4-wheel-drive (4WD) models will still drive, but only the front wheels will receive power.

Applying the electronic parking brake will prevent movement when parked, Ford says.

The automaker hasn’t developed a procedure for fixing the issue yet. The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration it will contact customers when it has a permanent fix. In the meantime, customers can “take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for an interim repair if they experience symptoms related to rear axle bolt fracture prior to availability of the final remedy. There will be no charge for this service.”
