Ford and its Lincoln luxury brand have issued a recall affecting about 170,000 SUVs and vans because their rearview cameras can stop working while backing up.
The recall includes some, but not all, examples of the:
- 2018-2021 Lincoln Navigator
- 2020-2023 Lincoln Aviator
- 2021 Ford Bronco
- 2022-2023 Ford Transit
Ford tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “Customers may intermittently experience either a rear camera blue image or a full blue or black image on the SYNC screen when the vehicle is placed in reverse or when the 360-degree view is selected.”
Ford says three different problems can cause the same effect. They include corrosion on wiring connectors, connectors misaligned during manufacturing, and a camera that can enter “sleep mode” when it shouldn’t.
Because the problems are different, dealers may need different methods to fix them. In some cases, they’ll replace the camera entirely. In others, they will add “robust strain relief” to wiring that should better protect it.
As with all recalls, the repair is free.
