General Motors is recalling more than 400,000 full-size and heavy-duty trucks because side airbag inflators mounted in their roof rails may rupture, even without an accident.
The recall affects certain 2015 and 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 and GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickups. Many of these trucks have been recalled over problems with the side airbags before. This latest recall applies even to trucks that have already had repairs performed.
Vehicles in hotter areas of the country face a higher risk. The manufacturing process may have accidentally trapped moisture inside the capsule containing the gas that inflates the airbags. That can corrode the capsule, and eventually make it rupture.
A rupture could send hot gases and parts of the roof rail flying into the cabin.
GM is aware of three incidents when inflators suddenly ruptured in unoccupied trucks last month during heat waves in Florida and Texas. GM reports no injuries from the incidents.
Dealers will replace the airbag inflators free of charge.
