Recall Alert: Cadillac Lyriq

A 2024 Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV drives past a pink sunrise. The car is silver. We see it from a front quarter angle, facing slightly to our right.New products have new problems. That’s especially true when a company starts building a new technology for the first time.

The Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV has been on the market just a few months, and General Motors has discovered a problem that can cause the vehicle’s infotainment screen to go dark.

It won’t prevent anyone from driving the cars, but dealers have been ordered to stop selling them temporarily while Cadillac works on a solution.

Cadillac has issued a recall order for the 186 Lyriq models already in customer hands, but owners don’t need to bring them into the shop. The company expects to fix everything with a software update.

The Lyriq, like a lot of newer electric vehicles, regularly downloads software updates when it isn’t being driven. If you interrupt one of those updates by opening the door while it’s in process, it can brick the screen.

Should this happen, GM says, owners should be able to get the screen to restart by turning the vehicle on, off, and on again. Yeah, rebooting. This is how cars work now.

Cadillac says it will fix the problem with a software update in early November. Like all recall repairs, it will be free.

Many cars face recalls at some point in their lives. Automakers try to contact every owner to let them know they need to bring their vehicle in for repairs. But they aren’t always successful in finding everyone. You can see whether your car has any unaddressed recall issues using our recall center.
