BMW has issued a recall for 3,256 vehicles because their passenger airbags may not deploy properly in an accident.
Affected models include some, but not all, examples of the:
BMW tells federal safety officials that a sensor that should detect whether some seatbelts are buckled may not be installed correctly. “If a driver and/or passenger was unbelted, the system could, erroneously, recognize the driver and/or passenger as belted.”
The car might not display needed warnings, and “in a crash, the supplemental restraint system may not perform as required.”
The company is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem, which was discovered during factory quality checks.
Dealers will inspect the seatbelts and replace the entire belt unit if they find a faulty sensor. Recall repairs are always free.
Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
