BMW has recalled just 235 X5 SUVs from model year 2023 because their second-row headrests may not protect passengers in an accident.
The headrests in the outboard rear positions, BMW says, may be missing a locking tab that holds them at the correct height. “In certain crashes, the head restraints may not remain fixed in position, which could increase the risk of injury,” the company tells federal safety officials.
Dealers will inspect the headrests and replace them if the tab is missing. BMW is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the defect. Technicians discovered it during an inspection at the factory.
By law, recall repairs are always free.
Many cars are recalled to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
