Stellantis has issued a recall for about 4,100 of its newest SUVs because of fire risk. The recall applies to Alfa Romeo Tonale and Dodge Hornet Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) vehicles from model years 2023 and 2024.
The company tells National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that some of the vehicles “may have been built with a missing or an incorrectly torqued nut on the 12-volt (“12V”) battery positive cable on the integrated dual charging module (IDCM) as well as the two high voltage (“HV”) connections with grounds.”
The recall doesn’t affect every Tonale or Hornet PHEV, just those built on certain dates.
A loose connector can lead to higher electric resistance in wire connections, “which may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.”
Because of the fire risk, Stellantis has asked customers to park the cars outside, away from structures and other vehicles, until the company can make repairs. The company says it is not aware of any injuries related to the problem but knows of “two field reports” that may be related.
The fix is simple – dealers will inspect the relevant nuts and tighten them if necessary.
