Kia has issued a recall alert for about 900 Kia Niro electric vehicles from the 2020 model year because they can lose power suddenly. The recall does not affect hybrid or plug-in hybrid Niro models.
Kia tells federal safety regulators that an Electric Power Control Unit (EPCU) in the cars may not be sealed properly. It can leak coolant onto a circuit board. That can cause the vehicle to lose power. Owners might see a Check Electric Vehicle System warning light on the dashboard as the problem develops. But it can also come without warning.
Kia dealers will inspect the EPCU. If it shows any signs of improper sealing, they will replace it with a new one. Recall repairs are always free.
Many, if not most, cars are recalled at least once. Manufacturers attempt to contact every owner, but they don’t always reach them all with the news. Find out if your car has ever been recalled at our recall center.
