Nissan is recalling about 140,000 2020 and 2021 model-year Sentras over the steering system. The vehicles may have one or two bent tie rods.
“A bent tie rod condition may impair the driver’s ability to steer the vehicle,” the company says. “In the worst-case scenario, if the tie rod breaks, it can lead to a partial loss of steering control which may increase the risk of a crash.”
Drivers may observe clues that the problem is developing. The steering wheel could vibrate or need to be slightly off-center to keep the car straight.
Nissan says that as few as 1% of the recalled vehicles may have the defect. But it must inspect them all to find them.
Dealers will inspect the tie rods and replace them if necessary. Recall repairs are always free.
Many cars face one or more recalls, even years after they leave the factory. Dealers attempt to notify owners, but they don’t always reach everyone.
