Ram has recalled 1,879 trucks because their side curtain airbag inflators can explode without a trigger.
Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:
- 2019 Ram 1500 Classic
- 2019 Ram 3500
- 2019-2020 Ram 2500
Airbags work thanks to inflators – small capsules of chemicals that combine when triggered to form a rapidly expanding gas. That gas fills the airbag so it can cushion your body inside a collapsing car during an accident.
But Ram tells federal safety regulators that inflators from one particular shipment used in late 2019 are suspect. Moisture may have been trapped inside during the assembly process. It can corrode the inflators from the inside, which could make them fracture suddenly.
That could send hot metal fragments flying into the cabin, where they might injure occupants. The company knows of no accidents or injuries, but one warranty report related to the problem.
Dealers will replace the inflators to fix the problem.
By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
Manufacturers recall many cars, often more than once, during their lifespan. Automakers try to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all. Discover if your vehicle has any outstanding recalls with the easy-to-use vehicle identification number (VIN) tool at our recall center.
