Ram has recalled 1,761 trucks because their side curtain airbag inflators can rupture, sending hot metal fragments flying into the cabin where they can injure occupants.
Airbags inflate thanks to small metal capsules of chemicals called inflators. In an accident, the chemicals inside an inflator combine to produce a rapidly expanding gas. As designed, that gas should squirt out of a nozzle to quickly inflate a folded airbag.
But Ram says the inflators used in some trucks can rupture in a small explosion instead. They may have become corroded due to moisture during the production process and need to be replaced.
Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:
The company tells federal safety regulators that it knows of no injuries or accidents related to this problem.
Dealers will replace the inflators, free of charge.
