Nissan Motor Company has created a new Nismo Cars unit aimed at significantly raising the presence and profile of the automaker’s performance operation around the world. Technically a division of Nissan’s Autech Japan Inc., a vehicle-converter operation, the new Nismo Cars Business Department will utilize resources from Nissan, Autech and Nissan Motorsports International Co, Ltd. as well as other group companies to fast-track development of future products with higher enthusiast appeal.

Takao Katagiri, president and CEO of both Autech Japan and Nissan Motorsports International, indicated the goal of this new organization is to more than double the current seven Nismo-spec models produced for various world markets as well as extend the reach into new segments including SUVs and even EVs. He anticipates the more aggressive approach raise Nismo’s annual sales numbers from today’s 15,000 to over 100,000 units by the early 2020’s while reaching into new markets. "As a Nissan sub-brand, Nismo further builds upon the core values of Nissan cars," noted Katagiri. "With the combined expertise of Nissan group companies, Nismo road cars will make customers enjoy Nissan cars more than ever."

A large part of the Nismo sales are expected to come from attracting new buyers in the U.S and Europe as well as in China. While offering no specifics, Katagiri said the first of these new Nismo Cars effort will roll out sometime late fall and winter. Nissan presently sells four Nismo-tweaked street models in America: the GT-R, 370Z, Juke and Sentra.
