The next Subaru WRX will make its debut August 19 at the New York Auto Show. It will likely go on sale a few months after that.
The WRX is almost the last of its kind. It’s one of very few all-wheel drive, compact sport sedans built by non-luxury manufacturers, and the only one tuned for off-road driving. There are a handful of other high-speed compact cars — the Hyundai Elantra N and Honda Civic Type R come to mind — but those are not built for rally racing. The WRX is.
But it’s getting long in the tooth. So Subaru has a new one in store.
The current 2021 WRX starts at $27,495, plus a $925 delivery fee.
Today’s announcement came along with a teaser shot showing the car’s profile mostly hidden by the dust it’s kicking up. An accompanying video doesn’t reveal much more, consisting mostly of overhead shots of the car tearing up a desert. A wide hood scoop and two center-mounted exhaust pipes suggest a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, in keeping with prior editions of the car. A brief shot of a speedometer shows a 6,000 rpm redline.
We’ll know more in August.
