Volvo released a preview of the XC40 compact crossover SUV which will launch sometime in 2017. Set to debut at the corporate HQ in Gothenberg, Sweden, the production version will be based on the new CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) that was co-developed with Volvo’s Chinese parent company, Geely. That same, aluminum-intensive platform will also underpin Volvo’s next S40 Sedan and V40 Wagon models.

Even in this modest glimpse of what lies ahead, the vehicle appears to borrow a fair bit of the firm’s latest design flair in the front fascia with its Thor’s Hammer headlamp treatment. Both 3-cylinder and 4-cylinder versions of the new Drive-E engines as well as plug-in hybrid power are likely.

While releasing no other details, Volvo previously touted the potential of this advanced structure. “CMA is a key part of the continued growth strategy of the Volvo Cars brand,” noted Björn Annwall, Senior Vice President, Sales Marketing and Customer Service at Volvo when the platform was announced last fall. “Apart from offering all the benefits and features of a larger premium car, such as the industry-leading safety, powertrain and infotainment technologies, CMA will deliver a true and distinctive Volvo driving and ownership experience setting it apart from others in this growing premium segment.”
