A new Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) is on the way for the 2023 model year. It will feature all-wheel drive, with an electric motor on each axle adding to the power of a gasoline engine under the hood. Seven driving modes will let drivers adjust for road (or off-road) conditions.
Mitsubishi keeps the Outlander series on an unusual development cycle. It updates the gasoline-powered Outlander, then updates the PHEV version later.
Two Outlander Models, Updated a Year Apart
The gasoline-powered Mitsubishi Outlander is all-new for 2022. It features three rows of seating, a stylish cabin with excellent connectivity, and a distinctive look. It’s available now.
But the Outlander PHEV currently on dealership lots is based on the previous version of that SUV. It can travel under electric power alone for up to 24 miles but looks more dated than the current Outlander and offers just two rows of seats.
The 2022 Outlander PHEV currently for sale starts at $36,695, plus a destination and handling fee of $1,195. When the gasoline outlander was redesigned for 2022, it saw a price bump of less than $1,000. So the 2023 Outlander PHEV may see a similarly slight increase.
The 2023 update, due out in the second half of next year, will catch the Outlander PHEV up to its gasoline-powered sibling. It looks identical, save for a hybrid badge and a charging port. It offers seating for seven.
“Super All-Wheel Control”
A system Mitsubishi calls Super All-Wheel Control combines all-wheel-drive with a stability control program that can brake the front and rear wheels separately.
“This reduces the load on the front wheels and makes it possible to extract the maximum performance from all four tires in a more balanced manner and delivers handling true to the driver’s intent for safe, secure, and comfortable driving in various conditions,” Mitsubishi says.
