- 2023 Honda Civic Type R Price: TBA, but we expect a figure around $40,000
In July, Honda revealed an all-new high-performance 2023 Civic Type R but left out some of the most important details. Today, we have a few of them.
Notably, 315.
That’s the horsepower total for Honda’s Frankenstein blend of an affordable compact car and a race car.
The Two High-Performance Civics
You know what a Honda Civic is. In addition to the bread-and-butter standard models, Honda builds two high-performance versions of its successful compact car.
The Civic Si gets a version of the same 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine found in higher-end Civic EX and Touring models but retuned to make more of its power available at neighborhood speeds. It’s available with a manual transmission with rev-matching not available on lower-priced Civics and carries a sticker price of $27,500, plus a $1,095 delivery fee.

The Civic Type R is the other one. A step up from even the Si, it looks more like a race car and less like a commuter car, though you can use it to get to work.
2023 Honda Civic Type R Specs
On the outside, it’s longer, lower, and wider than the Si. It wears a prominent rear spoiler on die-cast aluminum stays and three exhaust pipes centered under a rear diffuser.
Inside, it’s red. Bright red. Honda designers tested dozens of reds to find the bold color they wanted for the suede-like upholstery. Brushed aluminum and black trim accent the drama.
Under the hood, we now know, is a 315-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. A larger grille opening, bigger radiator, and larger fan than the last-generation Type R help keep it cool even during track use.
The front track is 1 inch wider, and the rear track 0.75 inches wider than the last Type R. Suspension geometry is the same, including the fantastic dual-axis strut front suspension setup that all but eliminated torque steer on previous Type R models. But Honda says it has all been retuned to improve steering feel.
It all rides on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires that are 20mm wider than those worn on the last version.
The only number we’re still waiting for is the price. Honda has remained silent on that subject. The last Type R pushed close to the $40,000 line, and we wouldn’t be surprised if this is the first one to cross it. We’ll bring you that final spec when we have it.
