Although meant strictly for European and Asian markets, the new Ford Tourneo Custom van does offer an early look at the style and features we can expect to see when the automaker finally replaces its veteran full-size E-Series/Econoline vans here in fall 2013. Presented in concept form earlier this month in Geneva, the production model Tourneo Custom seen here retains most of the dynamic visual character of the original one-off, bringing Ford’s "Kinetic Design" language to the truck side of the game. It also introduces a greater level of refinement and comfort along with a number of new technologies that also are virtually certain to make it to the larger variation that goes on sale in the U.S. later next year. That vehicle will be built at Ford’s assembly plant in Kansas City, Missouri.
While offering no specifics about this next-generation E-Series — which will be badged here and globally as the Ford Transit — the automaker indicates that our vehicle will be both larger and offer higher payload capacity than the Tourneo Custom as well as have rear-wheel (and we suspect, possibly all-wheel) drive. Like the current E-Series, expect to see the all-new 2014 Ford Transit family offer a variety of configurations and wheelbases while finally introducing super-efficient EcoBoost engine technology to the powertrain menu.
As for creature features, the new Tourneo Custom brings a host of new and welcome touches that should also serve the Ford Transit side of the family well. Offering car-like cabin ambiance with dash design and layout that reflects the latest corporate look as well as a tilt/telescoping steering column, this versatile hauler can carry up to nine and provides generous luggage space and easily reconfigurable seating. Its comprehensive suite of standard/available items includes Ford’s SYNC in-car connectivity system with Emergency Assistance capability, Lane Keeping and Driver Alert systems, a rear-view camera and front/side-side-curtain airbags.
