- Mitsubishi will sell a more rugged, trail-capable version of its Outlander SUV for the 2028 model year.
- Pricing hasn’t been revealed yet.
The Mitsubishi Outlander keeps getting more capable on the trail. The company will use a trade show next week to reveal a rugged trail-ready edition of its best-selling product.
If that sounds familiar, it should. The Outlander already has a Trail Edition. The new version, Mitsubishi says, will be “the most capable Outlander model ever offered.”
It will make its debut next week at the SEMA (the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers’ Association) Show in Las Vegas.

- There’s already an Outlander Trail Edition, but the new Diamond Trail Edition takes things a step further.
The Outlander is a budget-friendly compact SUV, unusual for its fold-away third row of seats. The third row isn’t suitable for adults for long rides, but it provides the flexibility to carry up to six people in a pinch. Our editors like its comfortable ride and 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, though its comparatively poor resale value won’t make it the right choice for everyone.
Last year, the company unveiled a Trail Edition with a few rugged tweaks, such as all-terrain tires, rubber floor mats, and a standard roof rack. Those changes don’t turn the Outlander into a rival to Range Rovers and Wranglers, but they are a cost-effective way to make it a more trail-friendly vehicle.
The new model, called the Diamond Trail Edition, goes a lot further.
It gets unique front and rear bumpers for better approach and departure angles, and a new Rock drive mode that helps Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control all-wheel drive (AWD) system negotiate complex trails.
Other changes include water-repellent upholstery in dark gray with khaki stitching, and available Trail Green Metallic paint.
